Comparison

TrazaLab vs WhatsApp. Built for dental labs, not parties.

WhatsApp is free. WhatsApp is also where your 200 MB STL file gets compressed to 200 KB, where surgeon audio messages get lost in a 2,000-message thread, and where patient data floats without encryption. Here is the line-by-line comparison.

The real cost of WhatsApp

Why WhatsApp fails for dental labs

File compression

WhatsApp auto-compresses every photo and video. A 45 MB intraoral scan becomes a 200 KB JPEG. Your technician receives a useless pixelated version of what the surgeon actually saw.

No case linkage

Messages about Case #1247 are mixed with messages about Case #1246 and messages about the surgeon's lunch. When the technician revisits a case two weeks later, the thread is impossible to reconstruct.

Regulatory exposure

WhatsApp messages are not HIPAA-compliant and are flagged under GDPR as unauthorized patient-data channels. A single fined incident can exceed €20 million.

No file size limits clarity

WhatsApp's 100 MB limit silently rejects your STL at upload. You do not learn the file failed until the surgeon calls asking why you have not started the case.

Audio buried in threads

Surgeon sends a 90-second voice memo with critical instructions. The technician reads it in the middle of a busy Friday and misses the key detail. No transcription, no search.

No audit trail

Six months later, you cannot reconstruct who said what to justify a disputed case. WhatsApp auto-deletes per user, and the legal record is fragmented.

Questions dental labs ask before switching

Is WhatsApp really illegal for patient data?

WhatsApp is not explicitly illegal, but using it for patient clinical data without a signed BAA (US) or DPA (EU) creates compliance risk. HIPAA requires covered entities to have BAAs with communication vendors — Meta does not offer one for WhatsApp Business. GDPR Article 28 requires similar data-processing agreements. Most dental associations (ADA, FDI, Spanish Consejo General de Dentistas) recommend against it for this reason.

Can I keep WhatsApp for personal communication and use TrazaLab for cases?

Yes — that is the recommended setup. Use WhatsApp for "Hey, are you free Friday?" and use TrazaLab for "Here is the 45 MB STL of the case due Monday." TrazaLab can even send WhatsApp notifications to both the lab and the surgeon when a case changes status, so the habit of checking WhatsApp is preserved.

How is TrazaLab different from WhatsApp Business?

WhatsApp Business is still consumer-grade in terms of file handling, clinical data compliance, and case-level traceability. TrazaLab is purpose-built for the dental clinic-lab workflow with Digital Rx, STL viewer, Kanban pipeline, and HIPAA/GDPR alignment. WhatsApp Business does not solve the compression problem or the missing audit trail.

Does TrazaLab replace WhatsApp entirely?

For case coordination, yes. For staff chat, personal conversation, or quick scheduling check-ins, keep WhatsApp. TrazaChat is case-scoped — it lives inside the case record. Your non-case conversations should stay in WhatsApp.

What happens to my existing WhatsApp history?

You can keep it as reference. When you migrate to TrazaLab, existing WhatsApp threads stay where they are. New cases start in TrazaLab. Some labs export old WhatsApp conversations and attach them to the matching TrazaLab case as PDF archives — useful for disputed cases that pre-date the migration.

WhatsApp kept you going. TrazaLab gets you ahead.

Migrate in 10 minutes. Your surgeons never have to install anything new — they click your invite link and start sending structured cases immediately.
